Barnes Women's 1st XV overcome weather to take the win

Sunday 6th saw Barnes women’s 1st team travel to Chobham in truly biblical conditions. A lot of the team were waiting for the message to come through to cancel, but Chobham’s magic pitch somehow remained in good condition with only a few puddles. After a slightly aborted warm up due to the torrential rain, Barnes kicked off. As expected conditions made for tricky play, with a fair few knock ons by both sides. Attack went back and forth with strong runs from both sides. Our scrum was incredible, and a series of scrum penalties saw us get closer to the try line. Eventually after some strong carries from the forwards a gap opened for the back line, and hands out to Lily saw her go over. 5-0 Barnes.

Chobham didn’t drop their heads, and very soon responded with a quick run up the side of the pitch to score. 5-5. The half continued with very evenly matched play, although we were consistently dominant in the scrum. Eventually a scrum on the 22 saw Taz pick and go, somehow running through about 8 defenders to score. Sophie converted to make in 12-5 to Barnes.

A couple of missed tackles saw Chobham score again just before half time, and we went into the break 12-12.

Our defence throughout the second half was incredible, and Chobham didn’t score any more points. We relentlessly attacked their line, and probably should have come out with a few more scores, however a couple of unfortunate spills over the line frustrated our efforts. Eventually, after what felt like the 100th scrum on their try line, a series of pick and gos from the forwards saw Amanda score in the corner. 17-12 to us!

The last 10 minutes of the game was a frantic defensive effort from Barnes, with Chobham attacking us hard in an attempt to save the game. A try saving tackle from Liv, then a turnover from Morven in the final play saw us win the game.

Forward of the match this week went to Cam, who had a very strong game in the second row.
Back of the match was Sophie, her strong boot kept us playing in the right areas and she put in some big hits on the wing.
This weeks players player was vice captain Morven, who had a fantastic game, making key turnovers and massive hits.

Next weekend sees us play Chesham away, with the 2s also playing Ironsides away.
