0 - 14 down early on against a big pack; lots of talent on show

Jersey responded to the home team's kick-off with a long high kick; Barnes ran wide and after 3 recycles used an up-and-under. Jersey got the ball and soon went wide before kicking long and in fact dead. This gave Barnes a scrum back just inside the opposition half. From that they attacked strongly down the right wing getting almost to the line then were penalised for not releasing at the breakdown. A very good kick took the visitors to their line-out just past halfway. After it they released to centre, switched play then after 3 varied phases chipped over the defence. Barnes got the ball and cleared to touch but not far. The line-out was 12 metres out and from it the pack drove over wide out at 5 minutes with their hooker on the ball. The conversion missed.

Jersey cleared the restart to touch at their 10 metre line. Barnes just secured their line-out then kept the ball for 6 phases hardly advancing but got a penalty at the breakdown. This was kicked to 13 metres out; an error at the line-out gave the visitors a scrum 13 metres out. Barnes were penalised at that scrum and there was to be more trouble at scrums later on. The kick went into touch 8 metres from halfway. They set up a drive from the line-out then went wide before being forced into touch 17 metres ahead. A knock-on at the line-out gave Barnes a scrum. The scrum struggled to settle and the Ref. spoke to the captains. Barnes were penalised at the reset scrum and the kick took Jersey to 5 metres out. A drive was started; it was held at first then moved again before being held for a second time. The ball was then ripped giving the defence a turnover. This was followed by a Barnes' scrum 5 metres out; they released from that then were turned over. Jersey went wide for 5 phases before losing possession. Barnes got the ball and kept it close recycling twice before being awarded a penalty 24 metres out. The kick took them to 7 metres into the other half. The line-out was thrown long and Jersey got it before almost immediately being turned over. Barnes recycled 3 times then did not get the ball out at the next breakdown giving the visitors a scrum 5 metres into the opposition half. From that they released to centre catching the defence offside. The kick took them to 9 metres out from where their pack drove over early in the second quarter for the second try nearer the posts which was converted by their fly-half,

The restart went into touch just inside Jersey's 22; from their line-out they released to centre and advanced after recycling once then were turned over. Next they were penalised at the 22 and Barnes ran the ball. After 2 phases they lost possession and the visitors started running in their 22 and recycled 3 times. At the back of the next ruck the ball was clear and Barnes grabbed it and had it for 4 phases before the Ref. gave a Jersey a 10 minute rest. The home team ran the penalty, 8 metres out, and got another after 7 phases, but not advancing. They chose a scrum at which they were pushed well back, conceding a penalty 17 metres out. The visitors kicked for a line-out on halfway then threw that not straight. Barnes stole that, just; they recycled twice before kicking well to touch to 12 metres out. Jersey used a long up-and-under from the line-out. Their opponents ran back and after 2 recycles fullback Murray beat the defence to go to the line not far from the posts at 35 minutes. Centre Swash converted.

The restart resulted in a scrum for the visitors at their opposition's 22. That resulted in another penalty; Jersey chose another scrum. Both were difficult to settle; at the second the penalty was awarded to Barnes! It was kicked to just past halfway then Jersey stole the line-out and kicked out for halftime.

Two up-and-unders followed Jersey's restart; Barnes then kicked long. Jersey ran back with 4 phases before the opposition forced an error to get a put-in just outside the visitors' 22. They got the penalty at their under-pressure scrum and ran the ball. After 4 recycles Murray dummied and sent no. 8 Lewis to the line at 4 1/2 minutes. Swash added for the lead.

Jersey regained their restart, went wide ad recycled twice before kicking well to touch 5 metres out. From their line-out Barnes soon kicked to touch then the Ref. went back to a penalty for them at the line-out. The kick took them to halfway; after the line-out the visitors forced an error to get a scrum 6 metres ahead. Following that they ran wide and advanced with a couple of phases before they were penalised just inside their opponents' 22. Barnes' kick missed touch and was hacked ahead by Jersey; the ball was hacked back by Barnes to close to the visitors' line. Jersey ran well out of their 22 then had a kick charged down at the first recycle. They recovered but the result was a scrum for Barnes 2 metres past halfway. Another followed a metre ahead and from that the home team put together 11 mostly close phases to send replacement centre Davies to the posts after 15 minutes. Swash added.

Barnes cleared the restart to touch 2 metres past halfway; from the line-out the visitors went wide three times. Barnes forced an error then were awarded a penalty at their 10 metre line. The kicked gained 19 metres then they advanced well soon after the line-out with a break from their left wing. Following one recycle prop Ajuchi got over at 20 minutes and Swash added.

Barnes secured the restart and soon kicked long for territory; Jersey ran wide to get a penalty at halfway. The kick only gained them 10 metres and after releasing to centre from their line-out they were turned over. Barnes attacked strongly with 2 phases before they were turned over 5 metres out. The visitors kicked ahead then Barnes ran back and recycled 4 times before chipping to touch 9 metres out. Jersey soon kicked long from their line-out; Barnes came back but were penalised 15 metres into the opposition half. Jersey now ran a penalty and chipped through the line after one recycle. Barnes dealt with that and kept possession, advancing with 6 close phases before being penalised at the 22 for not releasing. The visitors again ran the kicked with the ball going into touch off an opposition player just past halfway. From the line-out Jersey put together 7 mixed phases that took them to 10 metres out and their penalty. They ran that and after one close recycle touched down at the posts at 29 minutes. The conversion was added making the score 28 - 19.

The visitors returned the restart with an up-and-under; the opposition got the ball and soon kicked long, this resulted in a 22 drop-out. Again Barnes got the ball and attacked strongly with 8 phases to get a penalty 12 metres out at 32 minutes and Swash kicked the points.

Barnes cleared the long and high restart to touch just inside their 22. From the line-out Jersey were forced back while retaining with 4 mixed phases. They were penalised 8 metres from halfway; their kick gained 17 metres for Barnes. Jersey stole the line-out and kept possession for 4 phases before their scrum put-in at halfway. From that they kept the ball close and advanced well recycling 3 phases to get a penalty 17 metres out. They ran this with 6 phases before chipping though to the line. The defence secured for a 22 drop-out. Running back Jersey soon dropped the ball then Barnes, after recycling 3 times, kicked long into the opposition 22. An error then gave possession back to the home team and from that replacement forward Crossland crossed wide out for the final score before the first missed conversion by Swash then the whistle.

12:30 kickoff delayed by half an hour as the Ref. was late. Dry, overcast, no wind; played on the 2nd pitch nearest Putney, next to the river.
