Barnes played to their capabilities

Henley secured the visitors kick-off to the 22 and soon used an up-and-under that went to halfway. Barnes went wide and were forced into touch without advance. From the line-out Henley kept the ball for 7 close phases before chipping through. Barnes' fullback returned with a kick to the other 22; two up-and-unders followed resulting in a penalty for Henley 15 metres from halfway then their kick took them to 29 metres from the opposition line. They released from the line-out and their no.7 broke clear through and passed to his scrumhalf. One more pass put prop Hughes over wide out at 5 minutes. The conversion was wide.

The restart, again to the 22, was followed by a flat long kick over; Barnes ran back then were penalised at their opponents' 10 metre line. The kick gained 26 metres; after the line-out and 4 varied phases a pass was dropped; the visitors got the ball went wide and kicked ahead. Henley ran back then were penalised 4 metres from halfway; Barnes kicked for a line-out at the 22. From that they advanced with 7 mostly close phases to get another penalty 14 metres out in centre field and fullback Hammett was asked to kick the points at 10 minutes.

Barnes returned the restart with an up-and-under that Henley dealt with then an error at the next breakdown resulted in a scrum put-in for their opposition. After that the visitors put together 6 close phases before trying an up-and-under; this got them a penalty 5 metres into their opponents' half then a line-out at the 22. Next a very good sequence of 12 mixed phases took them to 5 metres out and their penalty. They opted for a line-out and from it tried for a drive; that resulted in an injury after which the game was restarted with a 5 metre line-out. Their drive was held, tried again, then after 3 close recycles flanker Smyth forced his way over at the posts after 18 minutes. The fullback added.

The high restart resulted in a scrum for the home team 12 metres into the half. From it they released to centre with their fullback in the line then 3 close recycles, 2 to the blind side, spread the defence. A couple of quick passes then 2 close recycles put Hughes over for his second not far from the posts at 23 minutes. Fly-half Bolster converted for the lead.

Barnes stayed in the opposition half for some time after their restart and had the better of possession then Henley advanced from a scrum near their 22 with 4 phases then kicked to the other 22. The visitors' returning kick went out on the full resulting in a line-out 18 metres out. From that Henley advanced with 10 mixed phases to get a penalty 5 metres out. They chose to have a scrum at which they kept the ball in at first; then after one recycle their pack helped Hughes over for his hat trick at 34 minutes. The fly-half added.

Henley cleared the restart to touch at their 10 metre line. Barnes released wide from the line-out and replacement centre Adams broke through the line. After one pass the ball was kicked ahead to the line. The defence touched down for a 22 drop-out; Barnes tried an up-and-under that Henley secured. After 3 recycles, 2 blind, Bolster broke away; one pass then a diagonal kick to wing Robinson resulted in the 4th try at the corner at 39 minutes. The conversion missed. They secured the restart and kicked out for halftime with the score 24 - 10.

The first 10 minutes of the second half were shared. Then Henley after receiving a kick to their 22 went wide a got a penalty 16 metres inside their half. The kick gained them 25 metres and from the line-out they released to centre then an offload and 4 close recycles got them another penalty just outside the 22 in centre field at 12 minutes and the fly-half kicked the points

Henley retained possession well from the restart and were soon back in the other half winning a penalty that was kicked to 14 metres out. From the line-out they continued to monopolise possession but with the visitors' defence holding. Next From their scrum 20 metres into the opposition half Henley advanced with 3 phases to get a penalty 24 metres out. The kicked for a 5 metre line-out. From that after their drive was held flanker Lunnon was forced over at the posts at 24 minutes. The conversion was added

Henley used an up-and-under after the restart and got the ball back then soon kicked to touch at their 10 metre line. Barnes went wide from the line-out and wing Moorhouse made ground to the 22. After 6 mixed recycles they were turned over but their fly-half Strang intercepted, stepped, and ran to the corner at 27 minutes. An excellent conversion from the fullback added.

Following the restart Barnes used an up-and-under that resulted in their penalty at halfway. They kicked for a line-out 18 metres out then their pack set for a drive; they got to 5 metres out at the second attempt then the Ref. went back to a penalty 10 metres out. They kicked for a 5 metre line-out then that resulted in a 5 metre scrum for the defence. Next Henley advanced to their penalty 15 metres out and kicked to 8 metres from halfway. Soon after the line-out Barnes won a turnover then kicked to the wing after 3 recycles. An error gave them the next scrum put-in just past halfway. From that they went wide before the opposition forced an error to get a put-in at their 10 metre line. Offside at a kick after that gave the visitors a penalty that was kicked to less than 10 metres out. Eight close recycles resulted in locks Collins getting over wide out at 38 minutes. The conversion was unsuccessful. Not long after the restart Henley kicked out for the whistle.

Cool, overcast throughout, dry at the start after recent rain, rain later early in the 2nd half to the end; the pitch soft but mainly good.
