Better teamwork from the visitors

Barnes secured the visitor's kick-off then immediately had a kick charged down; Sutton got the ball and their prop Mount touched down wide out after 30 seconds; a very good conversion from centre Bourton followed.

The home team got the ball from their restart and soon kicked ahead; Sutton got the ball and used an up-and-under that resulted in a penalty for Barnes 30 metres out. They ran this and were quickly dispossessed. Sutton kicked for territory and Barnes ran back with 5 mostly close phases before being dispossessed again, but the opposition were penalised when this happened. This was 28 metres out and the touch kick gained 16 metres. Sutton stole the line-out then were forced back to near their line. The Ref. then went back to a scrum for the visitors 13 metres out. They soon kicked for territory; Barnes ran wide then recycled twice before a line-out for Sutton at their 10 metre line. This was stolen and the home team sent the ball wide advancing to their penalty 28 metres out in centre field after 8 minutes and fly-half Hammett kicked the points.

Barnes just secured the restart then soon replied with an up-and-under. Sutton got the ball and recycled twice close then once wide before chipping through the defence. Their wing Ghumra got the ball to score wide out two minutes after Barnes' penalty was awarded. Another good conversion from Bourton followed.

The restart went into touch off an opposition player 17 metres into the half then Sutton stole the line-out. They went wide to the other side to a Barnes' scrum a metre back. The ball was released to the three-quarters then quickly turned over. Sutton soon went wide, recovered from an error then broke through the opposition line before chipping ahead. Four more kicks followed leading to a line-out for the home team at their opponents' 10 metre line. From that they went wide and advanced; after recycling once they were penalised for not releasing. The kick took Sutton to their line-out 2 metres from halfway. This resulted in their scrum near there; after it they released to centre; Barnes got the ball after forcing an error and kicked well to touch 6 metres from the visitors' line. From their line-out Sutton soon used an up-and-under to clear to touch 17 metres from halfway. Barnes kept the ball in from this line-out and made ground then recycled once to get a penalty 18 metres out. This was run and they got another penalty 5 metres out after recycling 5 times. This time a scrum was chosen and from it their no. 8 Hind broke blind to go over halfway out at 21 minutes. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Following the restart and soon after an up-and-under from Barnes the home team were awarded another penalty. The kick took them to 17 metres into the opposition half then from the line-out they put together 6 mainly close phases before kicking through the defence. Centre Van Buuren ran on to touch down at 25 minutes; the fly-half added for his team to take the lead for the first time.

Barnes returned the restart with an up-and-under that resulted in a penalty for their opponents. Sutton attempted a kick from the 10 metre line that just fell short. Following the 22 drop-out that bounced off an opposition player Barnes kicked ahead. The visitors got the ball then were dispossessed at the second recycle. Barnes started another attack, getting into the 22. That broke down with a scrum for the defence 7 metres out. Following it and clearing to touch, Sutton worked their way up field forcing an error from Barnes. Next a penalty against them gained no advantage for Barnes. Sutton got the next scrum put-in and kicked into the other half where another opposition error gave them another put-in 29 metres from Barnes' line. After the scrum they put together their best sequence of phases up to that time, 10 in all, to get a penalty 27 metres out near centre field and their kicker added the points to regain the lead just before the halftime whistle.

An up-and-under following Barnes' second half restart resulted in a scrum for the visitors 17 metres inside their half. Keeping the ball in, their pack advanced to get a penalty 12 metres ahead. Their kick gained 15 metres then from the line-out and going wide they were penalised back near halfway. Barnes' kick was skilfully prevented from going into touch. Sutton soon used an up-and-under; Barnes got the ball then were turned over after recycling twice. The visitors kicked to touch near halfway; Barnes started an attack that got into the 22 before the Ref. went back to award a previously signalled penalty 20 metres back. The kick took the home team to 8 metres out and from the line-out they kept ball tight for 7 phases before being penalised for not releasing 7 metres out. Sutton kicked to touch 30 metres out then kept the ball in for a drive; next after 4 recycles by the visitors, each team tried an up-and-under, then the visitors were awarded another penalty 8 metres inside their half. A good kick took them well into the other half and to 23 metres out. Barnes chose not to defend against Sutton's pack setting up a drive from the line-out. The visitor's no. 8 Drye trundled on to Barnes' line and scored after 10 minutes. Bourton added.

Soon after the restart Sutton had a kick charged down which resulted in a line-out for the home team 17 metres into their opponents' half. From that Barnes put together 10 mixed phases to get a penalty 18 metres out in centre field at 15 minutes and the fly-half kicked to reduce the deficit to 6 points.

The restart was replied to with an up-and-under which resulted in a scrum for Barnes at halfway. From that they kicked ahead then two penalties with little in between led to a line-out for Sutton 11 metres from Barnes' line. Quickly after setting up a maul from that a player broke off to get close to the line. One recycle resulted in prop Mount getting over for his second not far from the posts at the start of the final quarter. Their kicker added. The up-and-under after the restart resulted in a scrum for the visitors 6 metres into the opposition half. That was soon followed by another for the other team at the same place. Barnes then kept the ball advancing with 4 phases before kicking into the opposition 22. Their opponents cleared to touch 11 metres out. The line-out was thrown too long but Barnes did get it and advanced to 2 metres out. After 3 close recycles a switch by scrum half Davies created a hole for his fly-half to go through to the posts before the half hour. The latter added to make the deficit again 6 points.

Sutton secured the up-and-under that followed their restart and used another. Barnes got that then were quickly turned over; the visitors kept the ball for 5 phases before dropping the ball; it was then hacked ahead by the opposition long to Sutton's line. The defence got back to get the ball then were awarded a penalty 7 metres out. They kicked for a line-out 16 metres from halfway then threw their line-out not-straight. From that Barnes advanced a few metres before being penalised. A very good kick gained 35 metres and from the line-out Sutton kept the ball close for 7 phases before kicks were exchanged leading to a line-out for the visitors 28 metres from their line. They advanced from there, first in a drive then going wide twice before kicking long to the opposition line. This resulted in their scrum 5 metres from Barnes' line; from that they put together a very good set of 13 phases to get a penalty in front of the posts after 36 minutes and Bourton kicked the points.

Sutton secured the restart and soon went wide and wing Ghumra broke out to the other half. After one recycle Barnes were penalised 16 metres from their line and kicked for a line-out 6 metres out. Barnes stole that then after a couple of moves Sutton forced an error to get a scrum where the previous penalty had been. From that they broke blind and sent Ghumra to the line then he went in to the posts. Bourton added before the whistle.

Drizzle before and at the start then some rain for a short time; dry before Barnes' 1st try then sunny. No wind; the pitch good.
