On Saturday Hertford struggled to win at Dorking and Guernsey at Shelford. While Barnes lately beat Guildford comfortably, Guildford have been thrashed twice recently by teams that Barnes still have to face this season: Shelford & Tring.

WP’s primary quality was beef

Barnes returned the visitors' shortish kick-off with an up-and-under: Westcombe got the ball and after 6 mixed recycles through then three passes sent fullback White over wide-out at 2 minutes. A very good conversion from fly-half Cameron followed.

Barnes had to replace a prop for an injury. From the restart Park soon kicked back well to touch at halfway. From the line-out Barnes released to centre then recycled 3 times advancing to the 10 metre line where they were awarded a penalty. It was kicked for a line-out at the 22 then thrown too long but they were awarded a free-kick at it. They chose to have a scum against the obviously bigger pack. From that they released wide, deliberately mixing up their three-quarter line then recycled wide to a forward before recycling again blind; the fullback advanced and sent the left wing over at the corner after 7 minutes. The conversion was wide.

Barnes replied to the restart with an up-and-under; Westcombe kicked long. Barnes ran the ball wide and their outside centre fed the right wing who went to the corner two minutes after the previous try. The fly-half's conversion was as good as that following the opposition's try.

For nearly 10 minutes neither team made significant progress then an up-and-under from Barnes' fly-half resulted in a penalty against the opposition 13 metres into their half. The kick took the home team to their line-out 12 metres out from where a loose drive to the line got over but held up. The ball was released from the 5 metre scrum and recycled close 6 times before the fly-half chipped over. This was for the right wing who made sure that it was he who got it and likewise determinedly got over wide out at 24 minutes. The conversion was good.

Westcombe's restarter decide to switch the kick away from the usual side where all the forwards were lined up and kicked it very accurately directly at the scorer of the previous two tries. The latter ran to the same place where he had just touched down, within 2 minutes of the preceding score and the fly-half added another two points for a 19 point lead.

After the restart and an up-and-under response Westcombe kept the ball for 5 phases with a good break after the first 3 got them a penalty 16 metres into there opponents' half. The kick took them to 13 metres out then from the line-out 11 further phases got them another penalty plus 10 more metres, taking them to 5 metres out. They kicked for a line-out and their pack drove over wide-out with hooker Bonner on the ball at 32 minutes. The conversion was good. The rest of the half was uneventful.

Barnes got the first penalty of the second half, 4 metres past halfway, then were given 10 more metres. The kick took them to just inside Park's 22. The line-out resulted in a scrum for the visitors from which they cleared well to touch. Barnes took a quick line-out and ran; after 8 phases the fly-half kicked diagonally for the hat-trick scorer who only just failed to get the ball and score. From their scrum 12 metres out Park cleared to touch just outside their 22 then stole the line-out. They soon kicked long and Barnes ran wide twice before a scrum put-in for Westcombe at their 10 metre line. This was followed by their penalty which was kicked exceptionally well to 19 metres from Barnes' line. From the line-out they kept the ball for 6 mixed phases before chipping through the line. Barnes kicked back then Park kept the ball to get a penalty at halfway. They kicked to just inside the 22 and from the line-out soon released to be forced back at an error for a Barnes' scrum 17 metres from halfway. They got the ball out under pressure and soon kicked for territory. Westcombe kicked back to the opposition 22 and Barnes kicked to touch 14 metres from halfway. From the line-out the visitors released to their three-quarters and were almost immediately penalised back at halfway. The kick gained Barnes 19 metres; from the line-out a cut-out pass from the fly-half to the outside centre made a hole in the defence line. Then, beating one defender, he went to the posts after 10 minutes. The fly-half added.

After an error from each team within the exchanges that followed the restart, Westcombe broke out from a scrum in their half, regained a chip through and advanced again recycling twice to get a penalty at the opposition 22. They kicked to 7 metres out and their pack set to drive. When it went down they recycled 4 times to get another penalty 5 metres out and a man advantage for 10 minutes. They chose to have a scrum; this did not progress. Their scrum half was caught with the ball at the back and they were awarded another. From that following a no. 8 pick-up then 7 recycles lock Clarke got over wide-out at 25 minutes. The conversion missed.

An error at the restart kept Barnes in the opposition half near the 22 for a while. Westcombe worked their way slowly to a penalty 5 metres from halfway that was excellently kicked to 5 metres from Barnes' line. Their pack set to drive but was held; they recycled 4 times close then went wide. They were turned over not long before the final whistle.

Bright with some blue sky, dry and mild; quite windy at the start and sometimes stronger later in the game. The pitch rather good considering recent weather.
