Tough weekend for Men's and Women's 1st XV but 2nd XV and Colts shine

Michael Whitfield26 Nov - 11:28

On a weekend of dreadful weather the Barnes rugby machine continued to march!

Tough day at the office for our Men and Women
- Michael "Rhino" Whitfield

It was a mixed weekend of results for Barnes Rugby last time out, both our Men’s and Women’s 1st XVs lost in tough away games against Bury St Edmunds (24-14) and Wasps (19 -12) respectively. Games between Bury and Barnes are always close and in horrendous conditions for both sides Barnes led at the break 10-14. Losing two key forwards to injuries did not help Barnes in the second half but in truth Bury played the conditions better and kicked better to win the game 24-14 without Barnes adding to their halftime score.

Our Originals team went down to a very youthful Weybridge Vandals Vets team 47-17, whilst the Outriders successful run came to an end against Battersea Ironsides 17-35.
But it wasn’t all gloom and doom!

Our Men’s 2nd XV continues to show resilience and overcame London Welsh 26-31, whilst the Colts beat local rivals Richmond 24-40, a picture of the Colts attacking accompanies this update.

The Women's 1st XV and Men's 2nd XV reports are below.

This weekend there is only one game on - the Women’s 2nd XV are at home on Sunday at 2pm vs Cranleigh Ladies, if you can get down, they would love your support from the touchline.

The next Men’s 1st XV is a big one, Barnes take on London Welsh for the first time in our history on 6th December at Barn Elms with a 2pm kick off, tickets are available for our annual Christmas Lunch and game here: Barnes vs London Welsh tickets

Onwards and Upwards Barnow!

Wasps 19 - 12 Barnes Women 1st XV - report by Co-Captain Kitty Robinson
On Sunday, Barnes Women’s 1XV faced Wasps away. Barnes were struck by illnesses and food poisoning in the build up to the match resulting in a leaner squad than expected but players adapted to changing positions and being called up to start remarkably well.

We knew that this was going to be a closely fought, physical match. Barnes set the tone starting strong, with big forward carries and Jeanette was over for the first try in the opening 10 minutes which was expertly converted by Sarah. Wasps hit back almost immediately to make the game 5-7.

Barnes were dominant in the set pieces, but Wasps had a few strong runners making ground. Barnes forwards got to work again, and Maria snuck over for a second Barnes try. Wasps reacted to a penalty faster in Barnes 22 and got over again, it was tied going into half time at 12-12.

Despite the limited bench, Barnes dug deep and continued their gutsy performance. Wasps, feeling the pressure bought on their super sub, ex-England international Bryony Cleall. Barnes responded well but Wasps managed a final run away try for a final score of 19-12.
We look forward to the return fixture at Barnes in March.

Coaches named Sarah as their player of the match for her fantastic work in the scrum.
Forward of the match was Jess P for her numerous strong carries.

Back of the match was Angie for another standout performance at 9.

London Welsh 2nd XV 26 - 31 Barnes Men’s 2nd XV - words by Coach Alex Wood

Barnes 2nd XV travelled to Old Deer Park for a tough encounter against London Welsh 2s, facing testing conditions that made for a challenging opening spell. Welsh came out firing, capitalising on early pressure to put down three quick tries, leaving Barnes with a mountain to climb.

But this group has resilience built into its DNA.

Led by Alex Wood, the 2s reset, regrouped, and showed real character as the game wore on. The second half belonged entirely to Barnes. With improved physicality, sharper execution, and far better control of territory, the boys began to pull away—turning defence into attack and momentum into points.

Two standout performances drove the shift:
⭐ Malcolm Nimmo — relentless work rate, big collisions, and real impact around the breakdown.
⭐ Jack Haythornthwaite — dynamic with ball in hand, intelligent decision-making, and a spark that changed the tempo.

Their contributions helped guide the side to a brilliant comeback and secure back-to-back wins for the Barnes 2nd XV.

A gritty, proud performance - and another step forward for the squad.
