Barnes Colts took on Reeds Weybridge for the third time this season in a friendly between two clubs that are full of respect for each other and familiar with each other given the number of times we have played. With school commitments for some of the boys on both sides, both teams were playing new players, which made the contest more interesting.
Barnes stormed to a 14-0 lead with two tries from inspirational captain Ollie with Jac nailing the extras. But Reeds are a team we respect and knew would come back. Their big and strong runners caused Barnes all sorts of problems. But the boys stayed in the fight, Max made a telling run from fullback to set up a try for George and a lead of 24-22. Patrick, a returning Barnes mini from Under 6 to Under 13 was outstanding and really took his opportunity for game time.
The last 10 minutes was all about defence, character and no small amount of luck! The game ending on a controversial note: when Reeds scored what we all thought was the winner only for the ref to call them back for a forward pass. Barnes won 24-22. A game that was in the balance all the way, but a big win for Barnes. These Colts have been a credit to the green and gold with its red rose all season - next: (i) tour, (ii) Semi Final and may be a (iii) Final. We will not lose on a lack spirit!
