Barnes very good at the breakdown against a big Jersey pack

The visitors secured Barnes' kick-off and made some ground before being turned over. After keeping the ball close for 4 phases Barnes went wider twice then recycled once more close before the defence forced an error to get the first scrum put-in at their 22. Jersey kept the ball for 10 mostly close phases without being able to advance before being turned over again. Barnes advanced to get a penalty 15 metres out; this was run and flanker Malaney touched down wide out at 4 minutes. Fullback Milner converted.

Barnes cleared the restart to touch almost to halfway. The visitors released to centre from their line-out then recycled wide to the blind side; they passed forward having gained a metre. Soon after the second scrum Jersey got the third having held up a ball carrier. Following that kicks were exchanged sending the visitors back to their line-out 16 metres inside their half. That was thrown not-straight; Barnes got the ball away under pressure from their scrum. They recycled twice before being penalised 4 metres ahead. Jersey's long kick was just prevented from going into touch but then Barnes dropped the ball. The visitors got it and recycled wide sending their fullback to the corner after 10 minutes. The conversion missed.

Jersey secured the restart and kept the ball close for 4 phases before clearing to touch just inside their 22. At first they kept the ball in then broke off and recycled once before being awarded a penalty 18 metres out. Barnes stole the line-out and put together 7 mostly close phases to send scrumhalf Libbey to the posts after 18 minutes. Milner added.

Barnes secured the restart then got the next scrum 26 metres out after their kick bounced off an opposition player. Again under pressure they got the ball away then they were awarded a penalty; they kicked diagonally for their right wing. The ball went into touch 8 metres from halfway; from their line-out they soon kicked for territory. Jersey ran the ball wide twice before being turned over. Barnes then kept possession for 5 close phases to get a penalty 16 metres into the opposition half; they ran the ball for 3 phases then there were two turnovers. Barnes went wide and a great pass by the outside centre could not be hung onto near the line. From the scrum 5 metres out Jersey started to run out but soon lost the ball; Barnes got it then were forced backwards and the visitors got another scrum 11 metres from halfway. From that they advanced 24 metres after keeping the ball in then going wider to a scrum for their opponents. Barnes kicked to touch from that to 17 metres past halfway then from their line-out Jersey soon broke blind before being penalised 6 metres ahead. The line-out after the kick was 19 metres from the visitors’ line; Jersey stole that comfortably. After recycling twice they chipped through; Barnes went wide then had a kick charged down. Jersey got the ball and went wide; after 2 recycles kicks were exchanged. The second went into touch at the visitors’ 22 then the line-out was thrown not-straight. Barnes chose to have another; that was thrown long and the visitors got the ball and quickly broke out to the other half. After a recycle they were intercepted; Barnes then advanced with two phases until the defence forced an error to get a put-in 18 metres from their line. Their pack kept the ball in and advanced to get a penalty at the 22 then kicked for a line-out at their 10 metre line. From that they released to centre then recycled once close and once wide. Next, Barnes won a turnover and sent flanker Dass to the line at the corner. An excellent conversion preceded the halftime whistle.

Just after the restart a Barnes' player got a 10 minute rest for a potentially dangerous tackle. From their 22 Jersey kicked for a line-out 8 metres from halfway then soon went wide and made ground. Then they put together 4 good phases to make much more ground until the defence forced an error to get a scrum 6 metres out. From that Barnes soon cleared to touch 26 metres out. Jersey's pack set up a maul from the line-out and advanced to get a penalty 17 metres out. The kick took them to 8 metres out; Barnes stood off the next drive attempt and Jersey recycled close twice before the Ref. went back to award them another penalty 8 metres out. This time they chose to have a scrum and after a small advance a forward broke off to go over wide out after 16 minutes. The conversion missed.

They cleared the restart to touch 16 metres from halfway; Barnes threw the line-out not-straight. The visitors released from the scrum and made 14 metres with 2 phases to get a penalty and a very good kick took them to 12 metres out. Sunny, 98% blue sky and little wind at the start; cloudier and windier at halftime; the pitch good.
