Barnes Women do well in Welwyn!

Barnes Women do well in Welwyn!

Michael Whitfield5 Nov - 16:26

Last weekend was a a rest weekend for most of our teams but our Women's 1st XV won away at Welwyn 17-21

A great win for our Women's 1st XV at Welwyn!
- Michael "Rhino" Whitfield

Last weekend the Women’s 1st XV took centre stage as the only game of the weekend, and they duly stepped up to beat Welwyn 17-21, who were in 2nd place in the strangely names Women’s NC1 South East (North) League before Sunday. The match report is below.

This weekend sees a cornucopia of Barnes Rugby fixtures, 4 on Saturday, with the Men’s 1st XV away at Westcombe Park, and then the Women’s 1st XV, fresh from their victory last weekend, are back in action at home against East London Ladies.

With Esher 2's crying off , Barnes Men’s 2’s travel to play Richmond and Barnes Occies are at home playing Ironsides , whilst Barnes Outriders are also at Richmond.

Our Men’s 1st XV face a tough opposition in Westcombe Park, currently only 6 points behind us in 7th place in National League 2 East. Last time out they lost away to Guernsey, as many sides do, but make no mistake they will be gunning for us this weekend. They look a stronger side than last season, when they beat us at their place in March 24-19. We will not need reminding of this, and they will fancy their chances of doing the same this time around, however, we have a resilient talented squad so bring it on!
Good luck to all our teams this weekend.

Please do get down and support your club on Saturday and Sunday, they love having you there.

Onwards and Upwards Barnow!

For Rugby! For Friendship! For Life!

Welwyn Ladies 17 - 21 Barnes Women’s 1st XV - words by Co-Captain Kitty Robinson
On Sunday, Barnes Women 1XV travelled up to Welwyn for a lovely sunny afternoon of rugby.

Barnes started strongly, and were on the scoreboard in the first 10 minutes with a speedy try out wide run in by Atlanta.

Welwyn responded quickly, levelling the score at 7-7. They were a physical team, with a big pack, and took advantage of a penalty in front of the posts to increase their lead to 10-7.
Barnes were soon back on the attack, with an impressive line cut by Noor to go over and make the score 10-14 to Barnes going into half time.

In the second half, Barnes had their backs against the wall, spending a good 15-20 minutes in their own half, with Welwyn running in an easy try after an unfortunate miss pass.
However, with cool heads, and after lots of scrums, our fortunes changed.

After working our way back up the field, with some big forward carries, Kitty snuck over the try line, in typical forward fashion, to make the score 17-21.

Liv Ponsford expertly converted our tries, adding the much needed extra points.
A stand out performance from Sasha had the coaches award her their player of the match.
Forward of the match went to Kitty and back of the match was awarded to Atlanta

Roebuck Estates Barnes Rugby Champion of the Month - James Parker

A bottle of Roebuck’s finest Classic Cuvée, their elegant sparkling wine, was presented last weekend by our U12 boys to James Parker, the Barnes Rugby Club person of the month for September.

James is our schools coordinator down at the business end of the club, and has absolutely smashed our Friday Floodlit festivals at the start of the season.

This is a slightly belated, but very well deserved recognition, for a stalwart of our Minis and Juniors community.

Thank you to our amazing sponsor Roebuck and well done James!
