We had a great win on Saturday beating a good bunch of guys from the Law Society 3rd team by 67 points to 14.
The forwards worked well and won plenty of quick ball for the backs to run with and they made some great tries with cleaver and neat play.
Thanks especially to those who turned out for the opposition to make a fairer game of it for everyone. And welcome back to James McCosker-Smith who made a welcome return to Barnes Rugby.
Tries: James Barnard x 4, Martin Walker x 1, Bruce Leahy x 1, Jose Fernandez x 1, Jonny Spears x 1, Andy Beaver x 2, Cris Pini x 1. (11 Tries). Cons: Gus x 5, Beaver x 1.
One thing I wanted to do was to maintain the top quality of our play throughout the match and we kept scoring right to the end. This is important for this week’s match.
We have Dorking at home on Saturday – and we need a good turnout please – let me have availability ASAP
Also please consider coming down to join the party on Friday night – Richmond v. Barnes at Richmond’s Athletic Ground – KO 7.30pm.

Barnes 51 Kingston 2's 14
This weekend we have a LEAGUE match AWAY at Rosslyn Park – please confirm availability ASAP as we need to get a big strong squad together for this one !!!
Last Saturday afternoon's rugby saw the vets run out comfortable winners with a 51-14 scoreline away against Kingston 2nd team.
Following an inspirational talk from the captain (something about if the forwards win so do the backs or something like that) a highly motivated Barnes team ran out and promptly conceded a try. A speculative kick from the back of the ruck by the Kingston no. 9 caught Gillespie out of position and his desperate hack succeeded only in catching fresh air allowing Kingston to pick up and go over.
This succeeded in waking the team up and we were soon down in the opposition half winning ball and following some good progress by the forwards, Nick Morgans was able to get over for Barnes first try of the day. Barnes now started to gather momentum and Tom Berry, who worked tirelessly around the park all game, soon went over for Barnes' second. A strong scrum led by Jerry Shedden and Richard Fenech and good line out soon gave the platform for Barnes to work a third try with Gillespie crossing the line and to some extent making amends for his earlier slip.
However, shortly after this Kingston again sent a probing kick over the back line and caught Gillespie out of position and his desperate hack succeeded only in catching fresh air allowing Kingston to pick up and go over and for Dizzy to complete his hat-trick (two for them and one for us !!!). Fortunately this was to be the last time they would score and before the end of the half Barnes had scored another two, the first of which was through Stuart Osbourne. Chris Pini finished off the first half scoring following some very slick passing along the line and some serious gas almost the length of the pitch. Two conversions from Angus Graham made it 29-14 at half time.
Barnes continued strongly in the second half even though our dominant scrum had been curtailed by their prop being injured after being held up by Gundog and Shedden and the scrums therefore had to go uncontested. Good possession and running from 1 to 15 led us to score another 4 tries and could have had more had it not been for some loose handling and passing. However the tries that were scored included some great team efforts and saw Dave Kessler cross for a brace, Bruce Leahy pop up in the backs for one and another for Morgs. Steve Osbourne converted one to give a final score of 51-14.
It was a great example of the forwards deciding who won, and the backs by how many, and certainly a satisfying win and a big thanks to all the guys for such a good turn out.
Tries: Morgs x2; Dave Kassler x2; Tom Berry x1; Bruce x1; Stu O x1; Cris P x1; Dizzy x1 (minus 2 for oppo!)
Cons: Gus x2, Steve O x1

22nd October - Barnes Vets 18 Richmond Heavies 46
It is always a tough game when we visit Richmond and last Saturday was no exception !! After a fierce and physically challenging match we came out on the wrong side of a flattering scoreline which should really have been much closer – but a loss at 46-18 is the final result. There was some fantastic tackling and rucking by the forwards, great running in the backs and a true commitment by all. Tries James Barnard and Cris Pini, Cons Gus x 1, Pens Gus x2
Many thanks to the Vets Virgins including Sam Powles, James Barnard, Alex Gemmell, Luke Powles, Nick Gilfillan, Jonny Speers, Martin Walker, Alex Rolls, Raj Shah, Steve Tait, Gareth Platt, Matt Monahan, who have joined us so far this season and it would be great to see more of you in the coming weeks.
Also hopefully we can see a more regular appearance from some of our more experienced Vets, some of whom are injured and some of whom we were delighted to see supporting on Saturday so come on down – Ben Roome, Andrew Beaver, Mike Whitfield, Andrew Scattergood, Laurent Bannock, Jose Fernandez, Harley Manson, Matt Chapman, Russ Barnes, Dave Shore, Nik Davies, Jerry Shedden, Charles Delemain, Paul Robinson, James Lancaster, Alex Davey, Stuart Osborne, Steve Osborne, Phil Clapp, Nick Bellis, James Canham etc, etc....
15th October - Barnes Vets 20 London Cornish 3rd XV 19
We had a good game against London Cornish 3rd XV who are a bunch of young players who obviously enjoyed their rugby as much as their drinking.
We conceded a very soft early try but managed to screw our heads on and through good running in the backs and good tackling in the forwards we managed to sneak a 8-7 lead by halftime.
The second half continued very evenly with both sides scoring two further tries each and with good kicking of conversions we maintained our 1 point lead to the end with a 20-19 victory.
Tries from Morgs (x2), Jerry Gillespie and with conversions (2) and Penalty 1 Gus.
