Old Emanuel 12 Barnes 51

Barnes further consolidated 2nd place in London S/E 4 with a comfortable away win against Old Emanuel, not far from SW13 at “Blagdons”, Beverley Park, New Malden just off the A3.

Barnes played into a strong wind in the first half and chose their tactics accordingly with the ball being kept tight by their forwards from the start. As has been the hallmark of the season, this was a disciplined performance from Barnes with Carson Russell dictating proceedings.

Barnes opened up a 10 point lead with unconverted tries from Huw Owen and Buster White. Old Emanuel were not in the game until a fly-hack was collected and scored by their right wing. Barnes responded with a second try from Buster White, and then David Leigh, following excellent passing by the Barnes backs, scored the best try of the half to lead 24-7 at half-time.

Following the break, handling errors started to creep into the Barnes game and this briefly allowed Old Emanuel back into the match. The home team scored a deserved try in the 10th minute, with Barnes responding with a penalty five minutes later.

Neither side gained further advantage and Old Emanuel’s defence then held until the last 10 minutes during which Barnes scored four tries. Dan’l Hewitt scored a simple try after Barnes pushed the Old Emanuel forwards off their own scrum. David Leigh scored his second try five minutes later before moving to fly-half. This was the catalyst for the last two tries with Leigh taking advantage of the conditions. Two kicks behind the Old Emanuel defence were touched down firstly by Tim Springhall and then Stuart Johnstone.

Barnes created many opportunities, going forward. Fonua Sikalu made significant ground every time he took the ball into contact, however this emphatic win was made possible by their defence, especially the powerful tackling of Nick Bradley who was justly awarded “man of the match.”
