Not Watching the Vets

1 year ago By Scribbler

Last Saturday and Next Friday

Last Saturday 4/3/17 I went to Barnes to watch either Mayfair Occasionals play Battersea Ironsides or the Vets (aka Harrodians) play Old Paulines. I had watched the Occies two weeks earlier and wrote a match report when they played on a beautiful spring day in Battersea Park.

Old Paulines had cancelled so I wasn't going to be able to watch the Vets.

Old Paulines are the "old boys" team of St Paul's school (originally St Paul's Cathedral School). The school, which has a 500 year history is now in Barnes not far from where our club used to play on the west side of the village when we were known as Harrodians. Barnes RFC was regenerated by past president Neil Copp as the Vets' team of Harrodian RFC (the rugby section of Harrods of Knightsbridge employees' sports and social club. (Old Paulines home ground is behind my back garden).

I watched the Occies beat the Ironsides; only one score in the first half but four tries to one in the second. (In the 1960s and 70s Harrods' 1st team used to play Battersea Ironsides' 1st team annually. The Ironsides were originally set up from a British Army tank regiment and were a very tough side to beat).

When Christy's Monday e-mail showed the Vets were going to play the Ironsides' Vets on Friday evening under lights at Imber Court I thought that would be great as it's only a bit more than a 5 minute walk from where I live. Later in the week I checked on when the internationals were being played I saw that Wales were to play Ireland at the same time; a tough choice but TV wins and I don't get to watch the Vets again.
