Gus did an outstanding job in organising the Boys and admin during the week, whilst I was Camel racing in Saudi! On returning it was good to see we had a team sheet with 17 and in many respects the guys won’t mind me saying that it wasn’t our strongest side; well on paper at least!
Come Saturday we were greeted with a large Orange thing in the sky and a gentle breeze, when the backs started applying factor 24 I knew spring was in the air and better still Springy was not late! We had a good warm up and the pitch was in great condition all making good for a great fixture.
Quins were a much larger side man for man and our work was really cut out in the scrum and with limited line out options we knew we needed to play an expansive game. Marty and JC played gallantly in the front row and despite the Quins pack dominance they did win a number of balls against the head. In the lineout Gundog worked tirelessly being our only lineout option and again we did win our own ball and made good use of it.
Jinxed Jonny arrived with an injury which was made worse early on so we had to adjust the scrum putting Gus McCaw in the back row…….! Quins kept smashing the ball up the middle and had a number of large players who sucked in our players to make the tackle.
And that’s what we did so well during this game, tackle after tackle and kept spoiling Quins ball. Every single player was outstanding with a commitment to never give up and it was that exemplary attitude which made this team one of the best to represented Harrodians……1-17 take a bow!
