Barnes ladies 74 - Millwall 0

Once upon a time, in a land disturbingly close to here, a squad of warriors formed to take on the mighty Venus women of Millwall. Fortunately for them, the warriors’ bus broke down on the A3 so the ladies of Barnes took their place, debarking from the swanky changing rooms to cheers of encouragement, ‘there’s a shit load of shit on the pitch are you sure we have to play here?’. Oh yes Millwall. Yes we do…..
Starting with just ten players, the game ahead seemed a daunting one. Especially as we had accidently on purpose eaten all of Gramps’ menopause sweets (Lucozade tablets) during the warm up. A quick jig around of the forwards to allow for a three person scrum and we were off! Fran EneeB (neemyneemo) immediately set the pace with a dash down the wing to open the scoring, quickly topped up by Leah with a textbook conversion. Luckily for us, the rest of that half was spent in their half, with Dibs, Sarah and Fran EneeB charging through the formidable Millwall forwards to score a happy handful of tries.
The second half started much the same with Dibs’ playing a game of kick and catch with Millwall’s scrum-half, winning and setting up the next few tries which left Millwall exhausted but definitely not defeated. We won’t mention how you fell over 2 meters away from the try line, Dibs. Ahem.
Enter the beast. Our very own secret weapon, Marita (or was it Martina?) provided a unique transport service for Millwall during the second half, with many hanging off her shirt as she ploughed her way to their try line, taking a few of them out in the process. Grandma also had her fair share of ground making and didn’t even need to use her freedom pass! Winner.
We would like to send a special shout out to our number one supporter, Rhi’s Dad, who gave us great support throughout the match and even got to see Rhi add to the score sheet as well as get in a good few tackles.
With an epic win of 74-0, Barnes ladies worked hard and fought to the end to make sure our second match of the season was a bench marker. Millwall didn’t give up and gave us as good as they got throughout the entire match and were a great team to come up against. We look forward to going to Millwall later in the season for round two.
But in the meantime, let’s not allow this victory get the better of us but continue to work hard at training. Improving the communication between us, making our passing smoother, remembering each others’ strengths and weaknesses and helping each other out when necessary.
After all, how else are we going to win the next all-team-post-match-boat-race?
