Two early tries ensured comfortable win
Civil Service fought to the end and were particulary good with their rolling mauls that got them 3 tries
The visitors kicked off with the advantage of the wind; several kicks followed with little else in between until Barnes' scrumhalf Reeves made a 30 metre break and Civil Service were penalised 9 metres out. The kick got the visitors a line-out 5 metres out. Service stopped the drive then forced an error to get the first scrum put-in. From that they recycled twice before clearing to touch 29 metres out. Service prevented opposition advance before being penalised 14 metres inside their half. A very good kick took Barnes to another line-out 5 metres out. This time the ball was quickly released, but not far, then recycled twice and fly-half Williams-Davies found a diagonal line to touch down near the posts on 5 minutes. Fullback O'Toole converted. The visitors did not deal with the restart and the ball went into touch off a Barnes' player 29 metres from his team's line. From there Service started a rolling maul and after being twice stopped, momentarily, their pack got over within 3 minutes of the opposition try with flanker Clarke on the ball.
Service secured the restart, launched an up-and-under then hacked the loose ball into the other half and into touch. At their line-out 4 metres into their half Barnes kept the ball in then broke blind side to the opposition 22. The ball was recycled wide, an overlap was created and outside centre Holmes went between two defenders with 2 of his own team outside him and just got to the line. This after another 3 minutes and O'Toole added. The restart resulted in a Civil Service scrum 9 metres inside their half. They briefly got into the other half before being on the back foot again near their 22. Barnes put together 9 phases to get a penalty 13 metres out in centre field and O'Toole was asked to kick the points at 20 minutes. The visitors secured the restart and launched an up-and-under that was dealt with comfortably. Service ran the ball and kicked the ball flat and long near touch. Barnes had to carry the ball back over their line giving the opposition a 5 metre put-in. After the scrum Service recycled the ball 9 times getting to get an easily kickable penalty converted by fly-half Killeen at 24 minutes.
Service secured the restart, ran the ball and broke through the oncoming line before kicking ahead. Williams-Davies and wing Alkin then broke through Service's line before two errors resulting in a Barnes' scrum 11 metres from Civil Service's line. Service then forced the visitors back and got a penalty just outside their 22 then after a line-out, a scrum 13 metres into the other half. After the scrum and 3 recycles Barnes won a turnover and got back into the opposition half for a Service put-in. A penalty for Barnes at that was kicked for a line-out 15 metres out. Service stopped a drive; when the ball was recycled Williams-Davies made a half-break and the ball was recycled to no. 8 Popham who went to the posts after the half-hour. O'Toole added. The visitors had the better of territory and possession for the rest of the half but the there was no further score.
Service restarted with a long kick, helped by their now having the wind, and an error gave them the first scrum of the second half 14 metres from their opponents' line. Service stayed in Barnes' half until Holmes set centre Butler away then 4 recycles got the visitors a penalty 25 metres out in centre field after 7 minutes. The kick for the points struggled to fly. Barnes ran the 22 drop-out back; Civil Service defended well and got out of their half for a while before the visitors started exerting pressure again. Service prevented a likely score after Barnes forced an error and Holmes sent wing Lewis close. A crooked feed 6 metres out gave Barnes a free-kick for which they chose a scrum. After that Service got a penalty for offside; their kick didn't find touch and Lewis ran the ball back. Service forced a turnover and kicked; Alkin ran the ball back and the visitors got a penalty 28 metres out after one recycle. This was kicked for a line-out 11 metres out and from it the pack drove to the line with flanker Smyth on the ball early in the final quarter. The conversion was wide.
Barnes cleared the restart to touch. Not long after the line-out they were penalised and Civil Service put the ball into touch for a line-out 5 metres out. Their pack then drove over a bit more than 3 minutes after the previous try with hooker Forrester on the ball. The conversion missed. Three kicks followed the restart then Reeves started a break-out. The ball was recycled 4 times before being kicked ahead. This resulted in a 5 metre scrum for the visitors and the pack pushed their opponents back over the line with no. 8 Popham touching down. The conversion missed. After the restart Barnes got back to halfway then a kick through by O'Toole sent Service back to defensive line-out 9 metres from their own line. This was thrown past the end where Smyth got the ball and went over not far from the posts with 5 minutes to go. O'Toole added. After the restart Barnes kicked for territory and Service put together a good attack ending with a kick that the defence marked in the 22. Service ran the drop-out to get a penalty 30 metres out and put this into touch 9 metres out. Their pack drove to the line and Forrester broke off to go over for his second. The conversion was wide before the whistle.
