Barnes score early then in the last 68 minutes the points scored were 26 all.
At 4 minutes from a line-out in their own half Barnes started to put together a good sequence of phases that Wing Greenwood finished 90 seconds later in at the corner; no. 10 Hupfield added. Their second try came just after 2 minutes from the restart, this resulting from the visitors failing to deal with an up-and-under. This was scored by centre Hersey, again at the corner but this time the conversion was missed. Within 5 minutes of that Westcliff made it 12 - 7 after Barnes had stopped an opposition attack the kicked ahead. Fullback Bannister, who looked dangerous all game, set off on a diagonal run and got to 8 metres out then 2 tight recycles got no. 8 Cosgrove over and Bannister added. Next within 4 minutes Barnes went 12 points ahead again. Westcliff had been penalised soon after the restart and Barnes kicked for a 5 metre line-out from which their pack advanced before the Ref. awarded a penalty try and sent a man off for 10 minutes. Hupfield added.
After the next restart Barnes recovered from an error but had to clear to touch inside their 22 and from the line-out Westcliff put together their best sequence of phases so far resulting in their put-in at a 5 metre scrum. Barnes' pack pushed their opponents back but the visitors got the ball and prop Whiting forced his way over just before the end of the first quarter. Bannister added. For a dozen minutes there was no score with Bannister missing with a penalty kick from long range. Then a Barnes' error set the visitors attacking then another error gave Barnes a scrum in their 22 at which Westcliff got a free-kick. They ran this and centre Parmenter deceived the opposition to go over at 34 minutes near the posts and Bannister kicked for the lead. Just before halftime Banister's penalty kick hit the bar and stayed out.
From a line-out on halfway Barnes kept the ball in for a drive then kicked towards the corner and the ball was run into touch 10 metres out. From the following line-out Barnes' pack drove over with flanker Smyth on the ball after 5 minutes to regain the lead and Hupfield added. Barnes returned the restart with an up-and-under then Westcliff kept the ball in hand with mostly tight recycling before Bannister went through the line to score after 9 minutes; his conversion was wide. Barnes lost a man when the try was scored and the visitors restarted with a penalty.
Westcliff continued strongly; Barnes defended well then with the opposition attacking again, Barnes forced a turnover but had a kick charged down that gave wing Merrick a try at the corner at 16 minutes. A very good conversion from Bannister followed. Barnes responded well with substitute flanker Givens now on the field and from a line-out put together a very good set of phases to get a line-out 11 metres out from which their pack drove over early in the final quarter with Givens on the ball and Hupfield levelled the scores with a very good conversion. Not long after the restart Barnes stole a line-out that they should have been awarded, deep in their own half, and soon got a penalty that their backs ran well and after one recycle blind, wing Riley got over at the corner at 25 minutes for the final score. The conversion was wide. Westcliff battled on for the rest of the half as Barnes' defence held but the visitors seemed to have battered themselves to exhaustion.
