achieved by an exceptional sequence of retention (almost matched by excellent defence) camped in front of the visitors’ line for the final try.

Barnes secured the visitors' kick-off with the wind and kept the ball for 3 phases before being turned over at their 22. After 4 phases from Worthing Barnes seemed to get a turnover but were penalised and the kick sent them back to defend a line-out 12 metres out. They stole that and cleared to touch 18 metres from halfway. Worthing released to centre from the line-out then after 5 more phases chipped through but out on the full. From the third line-out 16 metres inside their half Barnes made ground keeping the ball for 3 close phases before the opposition forced an error. From the first scrum 5 metres into Barnes' half Worthing went wide and stretched the defence then their left wing named Barnes ran down the touchline to the corner before 6 minutes. An excellent conversion from fly-half McLean followed.

Barnes' team regained from their restart and put together 12 mostly close phases before getting a penalty just inside the opposition 22. Their kick took them to 5 metres out and from the line-out they recycled close 6 times then their pack got a driving maul going and close to the line prop McArthur broke off to go over not far from the posts after 10 minutes. Fly-half Hammett added.

For the next quarter of an hour Barnes were kept mostly in their half despite being awarded more penalties than Worthing. Then a stolen line-out started a Barnes' attack with good retention that ended at the opposition 22 with a scrum to the opposition. From that Worthing broke back with a no. 8 pick-up and advance then went wide and they broke though and one pass sent wing Barnes down touch to the corner then in to the posts at 32 minutes. McLean added.

Worthing replied to the restart with an up-and-under; Barnes got the ball and kept possession for 14 mixed phases before kicking into the 22. Worthing got the ball but an error just after that gave Barnes a scrum 7 metres out. From it they released close and got another 5 metres out. They kept the ball in at this one then no.8 Avis broke off to go over at the posts after 38 minutes. Hammett added, making the score 14-all. The restart was followed by a Barnes' scrum and after that they kicked out for the whistle.

The home team's second half restart resulted in their scrum 26 metres out; Worthing took that against the head. Next they recycled close 3 times then went wide and broke through to halfway. After recycling wide again they had a kick charged down and Barnes got the ball then a penalty 4 metres inside their half. The kick took them back to 26 metres out and their line-out. An error soon gave the visitors a scrum and a penalty at that. They ran this and made some ground with 10 phases to another scrum for them 11 metres from halfway. Barnes forced an error soon after to get the ball and hooker Hunter broke through to the 22 after two close recycles. They recycled 6 times including recovering from one error to 5 metres out where the defence got the next put-in. Before the scrum there was a long break for injury then just after it an error resulted in Barnes regaining possession 7 metres out. Following two recycles the Ref. went back to award a Barnes' scrum 6 metres out. The ball was kept in then flanker Wakeling broke off to go over after 10 minutes play. Hammett added.

Barnes used an up-and-under after the restart; Worthing got the ball and kept it for 11 mixed phases advancing to their scrum put-in just outside the opposition 22. From that they went wide and their wing Barnes went to the corner for his hat trick, 5 minutes after the try before. The conversion missed.

The visitors broke out right after securing the restart, going wide; they got a penalty 18 metres past halfway and kicked for a line-out inside the 22. From that they released then recycled 7 times closely but without advancing to get another penalty at the 22. They chose to have a scrum and got a penalty at that which they ran; 10 metres out they got a fourth and a man advantage for 10 minutes. They chose another scrum and advanced from that with a no. 8 pick-up then 3 close recycles to a fifth penalty. After consulting an assistant the Ref. reversed the penalty and gave a Worthing player a rest. The kick took the home team to their line-out 30 metres out then they advanced with a couple of close phases to halfway where they were penalised. Worthing kicked for a line-out 29 metres out but had that stolen. Barnes soon kicked long into the opposition 22; the visitors ran the ball back to their scrum 4 metres outside their 22. From that they went wide then wide again sending their other wing Maslen to the posts at 27 minutes. McLean added for a 5 point lead.

Worthing secured the restart in their 22 and started running; at the second breakdown 24 metres out they were penalised. Barnes chose to have a scrum and after it kept the ball for 19 mostly close phases to get to the line and over but held up. From their scrum 6 more mostly close phases had the same result. After the next scrum and 11 more close phases they were held up over for the third time. Following the fourth scrum and 5 close phases replacement prop Smith got the ball down over the line. This was after at least 44 minutes of actual playing time and Hammett kicked the points for the win.

Conditions: dry with fairly strong wind.
