The home team kicked off with the advantage of the wind; Barnes soon used an up-and-under that the Bees dealt with but lost the ball after two close recycles. The visitors got it and put together a very good set of 13 mixed phases. They got to the opposition 22 then were forced back but to their scrum 16 metres into the Bees' half. From that their scrumhalf broke blind to get a penalty two metres ahead that was kicked for a line-out 12 metres out. Their pack set up a drive from there and crabbed to the line and over not far from the posts with hooker Garrett on the ball at 4½ minutes. Fly-half Hammett converted.
Barnes dealt with the high restart and soon went wide; after two advances they recycled close 3 times then made another advance before recycling close 3 more times. This got them the second penalty after 7 minutes 26 metres from the home team's line in mid field and a man advantage for 10 minutes. Hammett kicked the points.
The visitors secured the restart and soon used an up-and-under; the Bees got the ball and retained possession for five mixed phases to get their first penalty but back 7 metres inside their half. Their kick gained them 24 metres then they had their line-out stolen. Barnes made some good ground before kicking into their opponents' 22. Birmingham kicked back well to touch 12 metres past halfway; this resulted in their line-out. From this one they advanced well with three phases before the defence forced an error to get a scrum 29 metres out. From that the visitors kicked for territory then the Bees ran back with 5 mixed phases before Barnes forced an error and got the ball. Kicks were exchanged then Barnes put together a very good set of 12 mostly close phases with the fullback involved three times before a pass to a wing was dropped 26 metres out. Birmingham's pack kept the ball in the scrum and advanced a bit to get a penalty then the ball was kicked to touch 9 metres past halfway. From their line-out they kept the ball for 8 mostly close phases while being forced back before the opposition forced an error to get a put-in 2 metres into the Bees' half. Barnes got the ball away under pressure and kicked ahead; Birmingham kicked back to touch 5 metres past halfway. From the line-out Barnes released to centre and got a man advantage for 10 minutes for a high tackle at halfway. This after 21 minutes.
The kick took them to 27 metres out; from the line-out their pack started a drive and advanced to 10 metres out. They then released blind before forced into touch 14 metres out. The Bees soon cleared to touch 26 metres out then the visitors were penalised at the line-out. Their kick took them to their line-out at the opposition 10 metre line and from it kept the ball in before breaking blind. After 3 close phases Barnes forced an error to get a put-in where the last line-out had been. From that they released to centre then recycled once before being turned over. Birmingham went wide and advanced then put together 8 mixed phases before breaking through the defence. After one more recycle a knock-on by the defence gave the attackers a scrum 20 metres into the visitors' half. They went wide from that and recycled close 7 times then a good offload created a very strong breakthrough. Eight metres from their line the defence forced a turnover and with that a very good break-out was started by their three-quarters. Wing Martey looked likely to finish but was surprisingly caught and forced into touch 15 metres from the Bees' line.
The home team soon kicked for territory from their line-out; Barnes ran wide and advanced then went wide again. After recycling close twice a diagonal kick to a wing resulted in a penalty at the next breakdown for Birmingham 18 metres from their line. Their kick didn't find touch and the visitors ran back with 3 phases before the Bees forced an error to get a put-in 9 metres inside their half. From the scrum they soon went blind and advanced to halfway then after four mixed recycles broke through with some good passing to send wing Dight to beat the last defender and go to the line 2/3 out from the posts at 32 minutes. The conversion was wide.
Birmingham soon used a long up-and-under after the restart. The visitors kept the ball for with 5 mostly close phases then tried an up-and-under that resulted in their scrum 6 metres into the opposition half. From that they kept the ball again and advanced a bit with 6 mostly close phases before their opponents forced an error and regained possession. The Bees kicked to the line resulting in a 22 drop-out. Birmingham ran back and made good ground with a good offload and two advances in 5 phases to get a penalty just inside the visitors' 22. The kick took them to 9 metres out and from the line-out their pack set for a drive and advanced to the line where it went down and they did not get the ball out. Barnes kicked the ball off for the whistle.
In the first half the visitors had had the better of possession and territory but only had a 5 point lead. They also had the benefit of playing with an extra man for 20 minutes. With the Bees' late score and last attacks it looked like Barnes had not achieved enough, although Birmingham had not got much advantage from the wind.
Birmingham secured the second half restart and advanced a bit before kicks were exchanged. The Bees then kept the ball for 5 close phases before using an up-and-under. Barnes had the ball for 3 phases before an injury stopped play at the opposition 10 metre line. It was restarted with their scrum and from that they kicked to touch 5 metres from their opponents' line. From their line-out the Bees kept the ball in but they did not advance and did not get the ball out. The visitors' broke blind from the 5 metre scrum and no.8 Hind touched down at 4½ minutes. The conversion was wide.

A near-intercept resulted in their scrum 30 metres from their line. Soon after kicks were exchanged with Barnes' to long and going dead giving the home team a scrum back a metre inside the opposition half. From that the Bees had the ball for 3 close phases before some chaos that resulted in the visitors getting the ball. They soon kick again excellently to 5 metres out where they stole the line-out. They recovered from an error then recycled wider but backwards then recycled close four times, advancing twice, to put Garrett over for his second after 12 minutes near the posts. The fly-half added.

Just after that the visitors forced another turnover and kept the ball for 4 close phases before chipping through to the line. This resulted in a 22 drop-out and after that Barnes had the ball for 3 close phases before they were turned over. The Bees went wide and broke away to close to the opposition line. After that they had probably their best sequence of possession with 12 varied phases until a pass was dropped 12 metres out. This after 18 minutes. Barnes used an up-and-under after their scrum; Birmingham got the ball and twice went wide then recycled close three times. They broke through and after a couple of passes a third was dropped 16 metres out. This time the visitors kicked ahead well from the scrum; the Bees ran back only to be penalised 6 metres past halfway. The kick too Barnes to 25 metres out and from that their forwards kept the ball close and advanced twice with 5 phases before lock Collins broke through from about 8 metres out to touch down near the posts after 23 minutes. Hammett converted.

Following this they put together good set of 9 mixed phases but without advancing to get a penalty still just inside their half. They ran it wide and recycled 4 more times, twice wide, twice close. They were being forced back before an error gave Barnes a scrum put-in 10 metres past halfway. After the scrum and recycling once close and making ground the ball was recycled to the fullback in the line and with support at hand he dummied 15 metres out to go to the posts at 29 minutes. From their line-out Barnes broke close and recycled 3 times before kicking long for territory. Birmingham ran back and started a good attack with a pass and an offload. Replacement Smith on a varied run chipped over and regained before being tackled into touch not far from the line. From the 5 metre line-out Barnes kept the ball close for 5 phases before kicking to touch 18 metres from halfway. After the line-out they forced a turnover and soon kicked diagonally. The Bees started a good passing movement then recycled twice before an error gave the opposition a scrum 13 metres into the home team's half. After a no. 8 pick-up the ball was recycled wide to Martey who made ground before passing to centre Davies who went over near touch. The conversion was wide before the whistle.
