Barnes taken to the cleaners and unable to get attacks going.
Reminders of when Elthamians' Renford Bennet used to blast through us a few seasons ago. This time another wing, Dom Lespierre scored 4 tries against us, less bluntly than Bennett used to.
OEs comfortably dealt with the visitors' kick-off and quickly advanced to their line-out just inside the opposition 22. From there they maintained pressure until a reckless tackle allowed Barnes some respite. They defended well while Elthamians continued with a varying attack. After going blind a few times they chipped to the line near touch and wing Lespierre regained to score their first try at 10 minutes. The conversion missed.
Barnes had to defend for most of the rest of the first quarter and at its end fly-half White kicked an easy penalty to make it 8 - 0.
More good attacking generally matched by good defence followed, then pressure got Elthamians over Barnes' line but held up. From the 5 metre scrum Barnes' defence choice left a one-on-one at the blind side and Lespierre was able to take the tackle and reach over to score wide out before the half hour. Again the conversion, this time from the other side, was wide.
After the restart several penalties helped the visitors stay in the opposition half. The last one also gained them a man advantage for 10 minutes and was kicked by fullback O'Toole from the 10 metre line at 35 minutes.
Barnes kept Elthamians out of their 22 for the rest of the half. Having dominated territory and possession the home team would have been disappointed by the score line. Their halftime talk changed things. In the 2nd half Barnes continued to defend as well as they could but many holes were opened up.
Elthamians regained their high and short second half restart and put together 9 phases to send Lespierre from outside the 22 to the posts at 2 minutes. White converted.
Running a free-kick awarded at their scrum 12 metres inside their half, 4 phases from Elthamians got them a penalty in the visitors' 22 which they also ran to send lock Self to the line wide-out at 7 minutes. The conversion missed.
After further defending Barnes got into the other half and penalties took them to their line-out 8 metres out. An error gave Elthamians a scrum there and enabled them to clear to the other half. Barnes then had some possession without advancing then they got the ball at an opposition scrum and after recycling 7 times they kicked into the opposition 22. Elthamians fullback Golledge ran the ball and kicked ahead to regather and score at the corner at 24 minutes. The conversion was wide.
Following the restart and an error by each team, Elthamians ran a penalty and quickly went wide to send Lespierre along the touchline to come in to the posts at 28 minutes. Replacement no. 9 Claxton added
Elthamians cleared the long restart to touch 11 metres into the other half then stole the line-out. They were forced back into their own half to their scrum put-in then from there broke blind and one pass sent no. 8 Ledger to the line wide out at 31 minutes. The conversion missed.
The visitors regained their mid-length restart and made ground with a few phases before kicking to touch 16 metres out. Elthamians cleared to an opposition line-out 14 metres inside the half. After that and an error they won a turnover before being penalised 8 metres inside their half. Elthamians kicked for a line-out at the 22. From that they kept the ball close for 3 recycles before sending the ball wide for replacement centre Rob White score wide out. Then a very good conversion from Claxton before the whistle.
Dry, bright with mostly clear sky, cool, variable light wind on a very good pitch.
