Redruth excelled at having a player at the shoulder of a ball carrier and putting the former through a gap between defenders.

Despite conceding 5 tries, Barnes' second line of defence prevented several others. Barnes had one of their more creative days. Line-out steals in the final quarter denied the visitors.

The home team had the advantage of the wind in the first half. The visitors secured the kick-off then very soon after that Barnes forced an error and got the ball and broke to the blind side before the Ref. went back for a Barnes' scrum 26 metres from the opposition goal line. No. 8 Crossland got the ball away under pressure; fullback O'Toole came into the back line and sent wing Cottenden away. After one recycle and an offload, lock Steele got over not far from the posts after 2 minutes. O'Toole added.

Barnes were offside just after the restart and Redruth ran the penalty and kept possession to level the score. From 30 metres out they recycled close 4 times before bringing fullback Rule into the attack; the ball was then recycled 5 more times by the forwards before wing Coote was put through a hole to the posts after 5 minutes. Rule added.

Redruth secured the restart before an error gave Barnes the second scrum put-in, this time 27 metres out near the touchline. They were awarded a free-kick at that and ran the ball. Crossland made yards before sending flanker Malaney over not far from the posts within 2 minutes of the previous score. O'Toole converted.

The visitors regained their short restart and first went wide before recycling close 4 times then breaking through the defence to get to 5 metres out. After recycling twice more tight they were penalised for not releasing. They were sent 10 metres further back then Barnes kicked to touch 9 metres inside their half. From the line-out they went wide before kicking ahead, high. This was kicked back to touch and Barnes' disadvantage. After the second line-out Barnes kicked ahead. The visitors ran the ball to get a penalty at halfway. They ran this and recycled 3 times; kicks were exchanged then Redruth ran again and recycled mostly close 6 times before chipping over the defence to the line. Barnes got back to touch down for a 22 drop-out. The Reds ran the ball back and soon chipped over the defence again. This time shorter and they regained then recycled twice before Rule put centre Parsons through a hole to the line at 14 minutes. The conversion missed.

The visitors secured the restart and recycled 4 times before Barnes forced an error to get put-in 14 metres into the opposition half. Crossland made very good ground into the 22 before Redruth won a turnover and recycled tight 3 times before launching an up-and-under. Barnes dealt with this and Cottenden made a very good break. The forwards made more yards then after 2 more recycles wing Carlisle sent O’Toole to the posts at 18 minutes. He added.

The restart didn't go 10 metres giving the hosts a scrum back at halfway. From Crossland the ball was got to O'Toole who kicked into the 22 where an opposition error gained them another put-in 8 metres out. They were pushed back by the visitor's pack and conceded a penalty. Redruth ran the ball wide and after 3 recycles kicked ahead. Barnes ran wide before a poor pass was dropped giving the visitors a scrum near halfway. From this they went wide and broke through the line at centre then chipped over into the 22. The defence got the ball before an error gave Redruth another scrum 12 metres out. This was reset after a wheel then after keeping the ball in they went wide and recycled 8 times mostly close until the defence forced an error to get their put-in 7 metres out. Crossland created space for a kick ahead; Redruth ran before soon dropping near halfway. They were penalised before the ball was put in. Barnes ran the ball but were turned over after their first recycle. The visitors were next turned over after a couple of recycles and making good yards. Barnes kicked into the 22 then were penalised 20 metres out. Redruth kicked to touch but not far then from their line-out they first kept the ball in then released to centre. They broke through after one close recycle then recycled 10 times before kicking for territory. Barnes kicked; the visitors made ground with 4 phases before dropping the ball. It was hacked on and into the 22 where a certain try looked on if the ball could be gathered. The bounce of the ball was awkward and the racing attacker was unlucky to knock it on giving the opposition a scrum 15 metres out with 6 minutes of the half left.

From their scrum Redruth advanced to the 22 with 2 close recycles then one to centre. Wing Bradley raced away to the halfway line where a near-error was recovered from. They went wide again before kicking; Barnes replied with an up-and-under. The visitors kicked again to which the opposition returned another up-and-under. Redruth dealt with this then went wide; after 2 recycles they chipped thru the line. Barnes dealt with this and soon kicked ahead. Again the visitors ran the ball then passed forward 4 metres into the opposition half. After the scrum was reset once, Barnes three-quarters created the best try of the match. Breaks were made but they could not outpace Redruth; instead great backing up and slick passing through many hands sent Carlisle to the line wide-out. The conversion just lacked the power to go over before the halftime whistle.

A few minutes before this a couple of old buffers exchanged thoughts that Barnes needed another try before halftime.

26 - 12 at 1/2 time

Barnes kicked back the second half restart. Redruth with the wind now at their backs kept the ball in hand with 3 recycles to get a penalty for offside at halfway. This was kicked for a line-out 29 metres out. The drive was held then a forward broke off with the ball and the visitors recycled close 5 times before a man was put through a hole to the line. The Ref. gave held-up and 5 metre scrum for the attackers. A no. 8 pick-up then 3 recycles got flanker Priddy over near the posts just 4 minutes into the half. Rule converted.

Redruth secured the restart and recycled close 3 times then recycled once more before kicking for territory. O'Toole kicked back then the visitors kicked again long - too far and dead giving the home team a scrum back just inside their opponents' 22. From that they went blind and made yards before recycling and sending the ball wide. Continuing to go wider they recycled twice before O'Toole went through the line from about 15 metres out to collect fly-half Williams-Davies' previously posted present at 7 minutes for a remarkable try. His conversion missed.

Barnes secured the high restart; they went wide then replacement scrumhalf Franklin broke close to a ruck and made yards. At the next breakdown Redruth got the ball and they recycled twice to get a penalty 8 metres inside their half for a tackler not releasing the tackled player. The kick took them to their line-out 12 metres into the other half. From that they recycled mostly close 4 times advancing into the 22 where several defenders held up and prevented a ball carrier fro getting the ball to ground and got a scrum 18 metres out. From that they soon cleared to touch 6 metres inside their half then stole the line-out. Soon after they were penalised near halfway and Redruth ran the ball. After one recycle scrumhalf Maunder made a good break to the 22 where the ball was recycled wide for another breakthrough that got them a penalty 15 metres out. This was kicked for a line-out 6 metres out. Again this was stolen but the defence were forced into touch for another line-out 5 metres out. This time the visitors pack drove over with lock Lawton on the ball near the corner at 16 minutes. A very good conversion from Rule followed.

An error at the restart gave Barnes a put-in 26 metres from Redruth's line. From the scrum they brought the blind side wing in to the line between 10 and 12 and the ball went down the line to send Cottenden to the corner. The conversion was wide.

Still in the third quarter the lead was now 10 points and that was the last score until just before the final whistle. Barnes secured the high restart then recycled 3 times, trying to go wide, before the visitors got the next scrum 8 metres into the opposition half. They went wide and made good yards then recycled 5 times with an offload in between until the defence forced an error to get a scrum at their 22. From that they recycled twice before launching an up-and-under. The visitors ran the ball then recycled wide then twice close before dropping the ball. Advantage was played and now Barnes ran the ball with 4 close recycles then chipped over. Redruth dealt with this and recycled close twice to get a penalty at their 10 metre line. This was kicked for a line-out 29 metres from their opponents' line. They got a penalty at the line-out and kicked for another 16 metres out. Barnes got this one but were soon turned over; Redruth kept the ball close and advanced a couple of times before being forced into touch. From their 5 metre line-out Barnes soon sent an up-and-under into touch just inside the 22.

Again Barnes took a line-out and advanced; they then put together 4 phases before passing forward 6 metres into the other half. From the scrum the visitors tried wider ball and after 2 recycles Rule broke through then the ball was sent wide again before they recycled 6 times close. The defence forced an error after the opposition went wider to get a put-in 14 metres out.

Barnes cleared to touch with a high kick into the other half, Redruth recovered from a poor tap at the line-out and varied their recycling through 8 mostly close phases until penalised still in their half. Barnes' kick didn't find touch and the ball was run from close to their line. They got the next put-in and a free-kick at that which they ran wide. They broke though at 10 then recycled close then wide to get another scrum 5 metres inside their half. Their pack kept the ball in to get a penalty on halfway. This took them to their line-out just inside the 22. They did not get their ball and the opposition soon were able to make a break. After 3 phases they were penalised just outside Redruth's 22 for not releasing. The visitors ran this varying their 5 phases to get another penalty at their opponents' 10 metre line. Again they kept ball in hand and 7 more phases from their forwards and both wings sent Coote over for his second at the corner. The conversion was wide before the whistle.

100% overcast, dry, the wind strong but varying; the pitch soft in parts, but fairly firm.
