- but the unpredictable bounces of a well-directed cross-field kick and an up-and-under helped Worthing get 2 of their 5 tries

The visitors kicked off; 3 more kicks followed then they got the first penalty, attacking. They were stopped by two turnovers then got the second penalty 18 metres into Barnes' half near centre field at 4 minutes and fly-half O'Hagan kicked the points. They kept possession following the restart, before losing it. Barnes ran the ball and soon got their first penalty, 9 metres inside the visitors' half at 7 minutes. Fullback O'Toole levelled the score. Barnes kicked for territory following the restart and Worthing kicked out on the full to give their opponents a line-out 11 metres inside the visitors' half. Barnes released to centre to get another penalty near centre field at 11 minutes then Worthing were sent 10 metres further back to 28 metres out and O'Toole added another 3 points.

An error at the restart gave Worthing an attacking scrum, after which they recycled well while being forced back to another put-in. Barnes were penalised at that and Worthing kicked for a line-out 14 metres out. From that the pack kept the ball tight then recycled 6 times, getting close to the line then O’Hagan kicked laterally, cross-field. There were two defenders to one attacker but the high bounce favoured Worthing's wing Nielsen who got over from about 15 metres out after 17 minutes. The conversion was wide.

The visitors secured the restart, recycled several times before scrumhalf kicked through for Nielsen to get the ball that had crossed the line and touch down near the corner for his second 2 minutes after his first. O'Hagan added with a more difficult conversion. Worthing cleared the restart to touch just inside their half. From the line-out Barnes released to centre then recycled 4 times, advancing, before an opposition line-out 19 metres out. Worthing were forced back to a Barnes' scrum 14 metres out. The ball was released to the backs and this soon got the home team their third penalty 15 metres out in centre field at 25 minutes and O'Toole kicked the points.

The restart resulted in a line-out for Barnes at their 10 metre line. From this their pack kept the ball in at first then released and started their best attack thus far with their backs making 3 breaks before getting to the corner where they were adjudged held-up. From the 5 metre scrum they recycled wide before lock Collins forced his way over for his team's first try wide-out just before the half-hour. The conversion was wide.

Barnes went wide from the restart before kicking ahead. Worthing ran the ball, recycling twice before an error gave the opposition a scrum at their 10 metre line. From this Barnes went wide then Worthing forced an error and got the ball. O'Hagan then ran more than half the pitch to touch down at 32 minutes. His conversion was wide.

Worthing ran the restart with good recycling and made advances three times before the Ref. went back to award a penalty 12 metres into the opposition half and send a man off for 10 minutes. Worthing kicked for a line-out just inside the 22. The pack started a drive before scrumhalf Peach had a go. The defence forced an error and got a penalty 10 metres out. Barnes kicked to touch then Worthing stole the line-out. A scrum at the 22 followed at which Barnes got a free-kick for a not-straight feed. This was kicked to touch and the visitors attacked strongly from the line-out before being forced into touch not far out for the whistle.

Worthing secured the restart before Barnes got the first scrum of the second half just outside the opposition 22. They went wide then were turned over. Worthing were forced back but then got a penalty that they ran and broke away, running more than half the pitch to the other 22. After recycling the ball was chipped through the line; the defence cleared to touch. From the line-out at the 22 Worthing's forwards kept the ball close before being penalised 10 metres out. Barnes kicked for a line-out 11 metres inside their half. The ball was thrown long and the visitors came away with it and they advanced to get the next put-in 16 metres out. Barnes were penalised when wheeling the scrum and O'Hagan extended the lead at 7 minutes.

Worthing returned the restart well to touch 12 metres into the other half. They dealt with an up-and-under from Barnes who then forced an error to get the next scrum put-in on halfway. A poor pass then resulted in a Worthing scrum at the same place then a forward pass to a 3rd scrum there. Barnes got a free-kick at this one and they ran the ball before chipping towards the line. This resulted in a high 22 drop-out; Barnes ran the ball wide and broke through to 5 metres out. They recycled wide for wing Carlisle to go over after 13 minutes. The conversion hit a post and stayed out.

Worthing regained their restart and advanced to the 22; they recycled twice before being penalised. This took Barnes to their line-out on halfway. From this they set up a good driving maul then released the ball recycling 5 times before being penalised 5 metres out for not releasing. The visitors kicked for a line-out just outside their 22. Barnes stole this and put together a very good sequence of 7 phases to get a penalty 15 metres out in centre field at the end of the third quarter and O'Toole reduced the deficit to a point.

Barnes soon kicked back the restart; Worthing ran the ball and recycled strongly through 7 phases to get a penalty 4 metres into the opposition half. They kicked for a line-out 10 metres out then had that stolen. Again Barnes soon kicked ahead for territory and the visitors ran the ball back with several phases until the defence forced an error to get a scrum 27 metres out. From this they kicked ahead; Worthing kept the ball in hand with 5 phases then passed forward 13 metres into the opposition half. Barnes were penalised at the scrum and the visitors kicked for a line-out 15 metres out. They recycled 3 times before being turned over; Barnes cleared to touch at their 22. Worthing were awarded a free-kick at the line-out and they ran the ball then after one pass and 4 recycles O'Hagan launched a lateral kick that was just right for centre Leeming and he went to the line at the corner at 28 minutes. The conversion was wide.

The visitors secured the restart and soon kicked long; Barnes kicked out on the full giving their opponents a line-out 17 metres into the home team's half. Soon after the defence won a turnover and went wide. Worthing forced an error after 5 recycles and regained possession. They launched an up-and-under. A high bounce again favoured the visitors and the ball was fed to Nielsen to comfortably get his third at the posts at 32 minutes. O'Hagan added

Worthing returned the restart with an up-and-under; the receiving of this resulted in a penalty for Barnes. They ran it to get another penalty 9 metres into the opposition half and a man advantage for the last 5 minutes. The kick took them to their line-out 9 metres out. From this the pack drove to the line with flanker Smyth on the ball with 4 minutes to go. The conversion missing denied Barnes the last chance of a losing bonus point. They secured the restart and recycled 3 times before being turned over. Now Worthing recycled 4 times then they were intercepted. A forward pass gave the visitors a scrum not far inside their half. Barnes wheeled this and were awarded another but the Ref. blew before it engaged.

Warm, dry, bright with quite a lot of blue sky; occasional wind; the pitch firm
