“Team coach arriving at the Scrubs”
3 Pillars Rugby
Barnes Vets played a demonstration touch rugby match against a Wormwood Scrubs “home” team yesterday to support the great work that 3 Pillars Charity Project does to use rugby and leadership to unlock the potential in young offenders and teach them loyalty, bravery, determination and honour whilst integrating them into a local rugby community upon their release.
We turned up at the Scrubs to face intense security checks and searches where we had to leave one man behind at the gate for a strip search as the guard thought he was smuggling in a mobile phone.
The pitch was surrounded by three wings of the prison with hundreds of inmates watching the action from their cells and we were supported by a very vocal group from the high security wing. So with a mix of trepidation and excitement we kicked off in 18 degree heat against a team of athletes who were all at least 20 years younger.
The young men have been through a series of training courses with 3 Pillars to learn rugby basics and what they lacked in experience they made up for in energy - the Veterans may have had the experience but the energy was a little lacking !!!
The match was fast and furious and whilst the temperature gauge hit red a couple of times the younger team re-grouped and put their energy into the rugby coming out worthy winners with 10 tries to the Veterans 9.
These young guys were determined to play well and show their new skills and they were all committed to the 3 Pillars programme and showed great integrity both on and off the pitch.
Many thanks to Francis Morris of Richmond Rugby who came along to referee the session and Nick Hartley of Barnes Rugby who took a really engaging and interesting training session for the guys too. Along with Nick Bradley, Nick Hamilton and Jose Fernandez it was an honour to meet these young guys and share our mutual love of the game and camaraderie of rugby.
