A successful evening at the Barnes Ladies Inner Warrior Session

1 month ago By Ashley Brandon

Kicking off the year with a positive spin!

Lady warriors in South West London converged on the training pitch at Barn Elms on Tuesday evening as part of the Barnes Ladies recruitment drive for 2018. It was a fantastic session with no less than 14 new faces joining in the fun activities that were lead by our wonderful RFU representatives, Lucy and Penny.

The session was filled with fun activities designed to equip our visitors with an understanding of the basic rules of rugby as well as some standard tackling and defending skills - useful as we had a mixture of returning players as well as ladies who were completely new to playing. Thanks to the rain on Monday, the pitches were nice and muddy, but did offer a soft place to land during some of the wrestling/tackling based activities, while also providing plenty of entertainment during the rugby netball as players slipped and slid around the pitch!

In between fun activities like the 'parachute fall domino' photo shoot and 'hugby' there was plenty of time for the visitors to mix in with the team over interesting conversational topics - if you could be an animal, which one would you be and why...discuss!

The evenings sporting activities ended off with a game of grapple rugby, which allowed all the new players to show off what they'd learned and to also impress us with their strength, speed and sportsmanship. Head Ladies Coach Andy closed proceedings with a few words of wisdom and an invite for everyone to return (and bring their friends) to training next Tuesday where he'll be holding a session for new players to continue to familiarise them with the basics of the game.

And of course, what Barnes rugby session would be complete without a nice beverage in the Red Lion afterwards, where we had a chance to get to learn a bit more about the warriors and hopefully convince them to keep coming to our wonderful club.

Training sessions will continue as normal - Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30pm at the Barn Elms playing fields. We have a home friendly game this weekend against Hackney at 1pm on Saturday, ahead of our Men's 1st XV game on the main pitch. Come down and support us and have a drink with us afterwards!
