“I cant wait to see Barnes Ladies go on a long cup run! ”
Following on from last weeks’ lacklustre performance, Barnes ladies took the opportunity to redeem ourselves somewhat by winning our cup game against Ashford Ladies to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament. We also welcomed back players returning from injury, with Neda resuming duties in the backs and Russ in the forwards.
The game was a slow burner for the first 30 minutes, with both teams managing to find themselves in their opposition's half without being able to capitalise on the possession or territory. Ashford struck first with an interception just outside the Barnes 22m from sloppy handling off the back of a scrum and Ashford’s number 8 taking full advantage to power through our defence before offloading to a supporting player who crashed over to the left of the posts.
Barnes didn’t take long to respond though, and with a few minutes to spare at the end of the first half we managed to answer back with a try. Lauren attacked off a scrum with a blinding run into the Ashford 22m, batting off the defence as she powered towards the line. Some solid backing up by the forwards allowed us to rumble the ball up to 10m off the tryline. Some quick hands by the backs gave Taz the chance to fly between defenders and dot down near the posts for a try which she also converted.
Both teams put in some stabbing runs and solid defence at the start of the second half again being a bit of a stalemate. A big push from the Barnes forwards around the 70th minute saw Lauren break across the line and crash down at the foot of the posts, setting up a perfect conversion for Taz. The last score came just as the game was drawing to a close, with an amazing attacking run from the backs. The ball was shipped out to Wellie who slammed down just under the posts, providing another clear conversion for Taz, closing out the scoring at 5-21 for Barnes Ladies.
Well done to Charlotte who was our forward of the match for a successive week, and our back of the match and top points scorer Taz. It was a great day out for Lauren too, who was voted players' player for her incredible breaks and fantastic performance at 8.
We had a fantastic day playing rugby in the sunshine, and the Ashford Ladies and coaching team were incredibly welcoming – even sharing their water with us in the dying minutes of the game. We’d like to thank them for their hospitality and wish them the best of luck for the rest of their season.
This Sunday the Ladies are playing at home on Sunday with a 2:30pm kick off on the BEST playing fields opposite the club house - do try and get down and watch us play, you may be surprised!
