Although many of us were waiting in eager anticipation of our first league match of the season, we unfortunately won't get a chance to play Canterbury this weekend as we've had a late cancellation from them. This does mean that we've got a win to our name, as the cancellation counts as a walk over, so we are out of the blocks before we've even started! That doesn't mean we should be complacent though, we will be facing them later on in the season and judging by their stats from last season they'll be a big challenge.
With this in mind, we'll still be looking to play a game this Sunday and our back office crew is working hard to get a fixture going. Failing that, we'll still have a training game although we might only be able to muster 10 or 12 per side - we need to get as much game time in as possible.
Our warm-up game against Tabard last weekend was a good way to break back into a rugby game with more than 7 players per team. It highlighted the key areas that we really need to work on to make the season a success, as well as reminded us of what it’s like to put in those big tackles thanks to the achy bodies we've had over the last few days. But it wasn’t all bad – it was great to be back in the clubhouse and catch up as a team after the game, even if Zeb’s insistence on proving her skirt was denim was a little overwhelming for the reporter from The Rugby Paper!
Well done to the newbies who took Forward and Back of the match. It was a great effort from Teddy and Esme tackling and charging up front, while Madelena (Mad Dog) put in some speedy runs and big hits out on the wing.
As mentioned, there will be a game this weekend although the exact format is not entirely clear right now - the bottom line being that there will be kicking, running, tackling and cheering to do on Sunday no matter what, so please come down and play or support us.
Kick off is at 2.00pm at the Barn Elms Sports Trust pitches just off Queen Elizabeth Walk, SW13 9SA. Anyone playing (which should be everyone who had originally agreed to play before the cancellation news) should be at the changing rooms for 1pm.
We hope you’ll be able to head down to the pitches to support us, and maybe join us for a drink in the clubhouse afterwards – the more the merrier!
