Alas the 2007/2008 season is now over but next season is not too far away! Here are a few things for you to be aware of:

Touch

We will play touch, (Kiwi touch with proper rules), every Wednesday evening at Barn Elms - 7pm start

Cricket challenge match & summer BBQ

We are planning a club cricket match between Barnes RFC and Richmond FC on Sat 12th July - We will also have a BBQ / Bar etc with the intention of a summer social and get together. Cricketers needed so please let Carson know if you can hit a ball, (We already have the fastest bowler in South West London in our club so thats a good start)

Pre - seaon

Official training starts on Tuesday 1st July 2008 at Barn Elms

Club Subs 

Standing orders for payment of subs should continue through the summer as they are based upon 12 months and not 8 months

First match 2008/2009

We are playing London Scottish in a friendly at the Richmond Athletic  ground on Sat 15th August 2008

What Barnes RFC means to me....

This week we launch a new feature -  famous players from other clubs tell us about why Barnes RFC holds a special place in their hearts.

This week it is the turn of that great pocket battleship Harvey Thorneycroft who scored over 100 tries for Northampton when they were at their strongest. But is was his debut for Barnes Vets that was his greatest hour, well to be honest 30 minutes... here are Harvey's memories:

“I remember my run out for Barnes Vets very well. I was asked to play by scrum half Michael Smith who had links to the Vets from his time in Hong Kong with Wyn James, a legendary Barnes hooker.

I was still playing for Northampton Saints but coming to the twilight of my career. I bowled up to The Bank of England Sports Ground which I had been to many times for England and England A Squad Training to be confronted by the then Vets Captain with Michael “Rhino” Whitfield, who appeared not to know me but said he would try and find me a game in the back row.

At the time I still looked like a winger and had never played in any other position 10 years other than the left wing however, the arrival of a certain Ben Cohen at the Saints, soon put paid to that. On his debut game for Northampton he told me he wanted the left wing spot, which he got within 2 years, but not without a fight.

So you can imagine my surprise being made a sub for Barnes Vets! In the first half I became angrier and angrier at this blatant snub and stormed up and down the touchline warming myself up into a frenzy. At half time Rhino went through the tactical changes to personnel  - “sorry mate what’s your name... Henry was it” “it's Harvey” I stormed back, “yeah, ok , well good news your on, back row please” . Well I lasted about three scrums and was soon posted to the wing and back to my comfort zone from which I scored about 4 tries in 10 minutes. It is true to say I was more wound up than almost any other game. Of course we won the game and afterwards all the boys were rolling around with tears running down their cheeks with laughter as they had all been in on the joke - far from being unrecognised Rhino had thought it would be jolly funny to sub me then play me on the flank

That night I had many beers with the Barnes boys and stumbled from the clubhouse at 1:00am’ish . After that night Wyn introduced me to Tim Griffiths, the CEO of Williams Lea, who ended up buying the events company that I had set up with Tim Rodber. What a day, what a night, what great hospitality - thank you Barnes, you have a great club and I will never forget the club, players and camaraderie that typifies all that is good about rugby”.

Coach's Corner - Meet Carson Russell

So how do we play our rugby at Barnes?

Enjoyment has the highest priority in my coaching philosophy.

If our coaching team can create a challenging and rewarding environment in which to train and play then quality performances will look after themselves.

At Barnes RFC we do not sit in the “comfort zone”, improving standards is all about learning and experiencing new skills and techniques, this starts with the coaches and everyone within the squad is encouraged to speak their mind.

Our progress to date is testimony to this environment, with players from all over the United Kingdom, Southern Hemisphere, Europe and America we have a wealth of experience and knowledge, no one thinks they know best but by absorbing and prioritising this information we have created an exciting and unique brand of rugby that has achieved seven promotions in ten seasons

This Year's 1st XV Captain - Si Givens

A warm welcome from me to Barnes RFC. 

We are now half way through my first season as 1st XV team captain for Barnes RFC, and it is exciting times at Barnes Elms indeed, with the club in buoyant mood after a successful start to the 2007/2008 season.

Entering 2008 in 3rd position in London League 1, we are looking to continue our good form  right through to the end of this season. 

This will not be easy but with fantastic backing from the club, from coaching through to administration, we believe that it is a realistic target. 

We have a great set of guys throughout all teams in the club, and have added a few new faces on the playing and coaching front this season.

Neil Hatley will be player coach for us this season, and as he has not done much with his rugby career so far I am hoping he will be able to learn something from me in my captaincy!  

All joking aside, I know that Barnes as a club has already  benefitted enormously efrom his knowledge of the game, I know the front rowers in the club are particularly happy. 

Barnes RFC is a fantastic club which still upholds the true values of a Rugby club which I firmly believe in.  It is one of the main reasons we have a very strong social core of guys and girls throughout the club and makes us plenty of friends throughout the rugby community.  

I look forward to catching up with you for a beer in the bar after a game at some point throughout the resy of the season.
