Cedric Jeanson issues a few last minute instructions before the game

U8’s, Sunday 4th December at Old Emmanuel

A chilly Sunday morning did not deter our U8’s putting in a sterling performance at O/E. The first half of the session was run by the O/E coaches and our boys were quick to pick up the new drills and demonstrate their slick skills in passing and TAG line formation.

Feedback from their coaches was that we had some ‘great natural talent’ and that our boys behaviour was exemplary.

To end the joint training session we fielded two sides and both defeated the O/E teams comprehensively. We scored a bucket load of tries and our tagging was ‘awesome’

Well done everyone! Our U8’s were great ambassadors to Barnes RFC

U11’s, Sunday 4th December at Old Emmanuel

A game of 2 Halves!

OE proved to be the toughest opposition yet for our Barnes U11’s and we lost 46-14 at OE’s. Barnes turned up with 13 players - slightly down on the confirmed numbers but still a big improvement on previous games.

A big thank you to George for chasing the parents! Today’s game was a steep learning curve but much more was  learned in defeat than in the last 40-0 walkover over Staines. The first half resulted in sustained  pressure from OE’s, producing two quick converted tries, and our first injury of the game.

In the second half Barnes hit the  ground running and scored a well deserved try from Bert. William converted and there was great commitment in the tackling from  a number of players, including Drew and  Nick.

Although we applied pressure on OE’s, they hit back with two tries from their speedy winger which restored a clear lead. There was a lot of good direct running from Bert and the backs, including Guy, which resulted in another Barnes try for Bert. James put in some big tackles but special mention has to go Eduard with a try saving tackle on their speedy winger, travelling at the speed of light, which brought the biggest applause of the day from both sets of players and supporters

Key messages from the coaches:

Best tackle of the day from Eduard

They were fending off and getting through so we must change our body positions when tackling and get lower

At the breakdown we must go after the ball like it's a chocolate biscuit!

The U'9's are brilliant at Ealing.......from 20th November 2011....

The Minis march on restlessly.....

Barnes arrived at Ealing Rugby Club for the West London Development League with ultimately a strong squad and considerable optimism following a good training session on the previous day.

The league was a tough one with Teddington, Ealing and Barnes’s nemesis, Rosslyn Park, to be played in that order.

First up Teddington – Barnes went behind to a well worked try but then someone lit the blue touch paper and the team clicked. Barnes’s continuity got better and when they understood that a good pass is deadly, the tries began to flow. Matthew proved too quick scoring twice, Lucas ran hard and straight, and Toby’s passing contributed to further tries for Jack (2) Hector and Timmy.

Barnes had to play Ealing straight away and left off where they had just finished. Ealing applied strong pressure but superb tackling from Jesse, Monty and others kept them out. Matthew started the try-fest and then there were good tries from Jack, Hector, a sweet break and try from scrum half by Finn, Timmy once more and a final try from Matthew.

This game was a real squad effort and contributions came from all. Matteo, Tom and Henry deserve special credit for the effort and improvement they have made during the day. It would all be needed against Park.

Barnes had lost heavily last time they played Park but there was to be no surrender today. It was a tense game of big hits and strong running. Park had the run of play in the first half and Barnes turned round a try down. The half time talk did the trick and Hector crashed over early in the second half. Barnes continued to apply pressure and the hits from both sides were wince -inducing. But Park wouldn’t buckle and though Barnes had most of the play in the second period, the game ended honours even – a breathtaking finale to a good day’s work.

BARNES MINIS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH IN SEASON FOUR - HUGH FERRIDGE SETS THE SCENE FOR THE COMING SEASON

In September 2008, a new Minis Rugby Club was set up at the Barnes Rugby Football Club by a group of parents. Its target group of 5-11 year olds was similar to other mini rugby clubs; the main difference was that this club met and played on Saturday mornings, rather than a Sunday. Simon Bound, an enthusiastic rugby player was frustrated that his children had to choose between Sunday church or rugby - so he set up his own club!

Here we are at the start of our fourth season with 150 boys and girls signed up to the club. Sadly Simon has moved on but his legacy lingers on. From those fragile days of a dozen scruffy kids and three keen but limited Dads we now have an enthusiastic core group of RFU trained referees, coaches and medics supported by a volunteer infrastructure of  helpers managing all areas from player documentation to CRB checks to the sale of kit and accessories. Our new kit supplier 'serious stuff' has supplied us with outstanding kit that the Mums and Dads are going to want to buy for them selves.

Our social infrastructure has also developed in that we now provide a variety of refreshments for all on Saturday mornings the proceeds of which are ploughed back into the development of the minis facilities and players.

Last season was an incredible season for the minis with the teams of all ages travelling to other London clubs as well as entering a variety of tournaments , surprise surprise, the kids started to bring trophies back to the club, just about every age group won something last season with some conquering almost all before them, our administration, ethos and enthusiasm is the envy of many of the neighbouring West London clubs.

As 2011-12 beckons we aim to boost our membership from 150 to 200, we have a new minis skipper and a Mr vice together with a mini's Director of Coaching, our infrastructure and organisation is more formalised as we grow but our spirit and ethos remains the same;

We are fun and friendly, we are open to all, we embrace the codes of conduct of the RFU and the morals of the game. Unlike many of our neighbours, we do not 'stream' the players, everyone, whatever their skill level, gets a game.

So this season come to Barnes Minis Rugby Football Club we start at 0930 on 10th September, all  5-13 year olds are welcome, any gender, no previous experience is necessary to join the minis, the only requirements are bags of enthusiasm and a desire to have loads of fun.

Cheers  -see you all down at Barn Elms soo!
